We're Not the Only Ones Feeling More Than a Little Emotional Watching Callum Leave MasterChef
While he made a "fantastic" duck dish in round one, he was put up in round two against his friend, Laura Sharrad, who he met six years ago when she first competed in the competition in 2014. They both talked about how hard it was to compete head-to-head, working at two benches which faced each other.
During the cook, Callum said that he felt comfortable with the flavours that he was using in his coconut-poached fish, but did feel threatened by "the sassy young lady that's hanging out over there, like a boss, nailing it". The pair spent the two cooks encouraging each other, right up until they each brought their dishes to the judges for tasting.
Both Laura and Callum teared up at the end of the cook, Callum explaining: "I'm feeling really emotional because either Laura is sending me home or vice versa, which really sucks."
When he was revealed to be going home because of his "mushy" fish, Callum, a fan favourite, took the news with grace. He thanked the judges and his fellow contestants and talked about how grateful he was for the Back to Win experience and all that he'd learned, even if he was disappointed not to take home the trophy.
His friend Laura summed up the gravity of Callum leaving the competition: "I actually grew up watching this show," she said. ". . . And fangirled so hard on Callum when he was on.
"It's been really amazing to do [MasterChef] with someone who is as amazing as Callum. He's so loving, so humble, so gracious. He's an amazing dad. He should be really proud of himself."
He should be! And all of us at home, who have admired his adventurous flavours, his articulateness and his modesty, are so sad to see him go!
