It's Official: Every Spider-Man Dates His Mary Jane

Apparently webs weren’t the only thing flying on the sets of the Spider-Man movies over the years – there were plenty of sparks, too! With the news of Zendaya and Tom Holland‘s budding romance revealed earlier this month, we couldn’t help but notice a pattern: Every Spider-Man film actor has dated his leading lady in real life! Though history hasn’t always been kind to the longevity of these relationships (we’re looking at you Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire) the franchises certainly help prove that Hollywood romances will never go out of style.

So, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane and reminisce about each of these great on-screen-to-IRL couples.

Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire

The original Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s chemistry was clear from the beginning, just remember that kiss! Yes, the upside-down in the pouring rain kiss. Iconic.

Though the Kirsten and Tobey kept the details of their relationship private, director Sam Raimi revealed to the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007 that the couple dated briefly while filming the first  instalment of his Spider-Man trilogy. After their breakup, Raimi explained, “I was concerned they wouldn’t get the same chemistry back, but it was just me worrying … They really like each other, I think, very much. And that relationship probably just added to their ability to trust each other.”

Kirsten and Tobey’s relationship also caught the attention of co-star James Franco, who played Harry Osborn in the movies, Mary Jane’s other love interest and Peter’s best friend. In an interview with Playboy in 2013, he revealed that the love triangle existed off set, too. “I had a crush on Kirsten, and I think I was upset about that as well,” he said.

Luckily, everyone involved was able to maintain a sense of professionalism moving forward, and the sequels were box-office hits. In more recent times, Kirsten has remembered her Spider-Man experience fondly, telling Marie Claire UK in 2017, “We made the best ones, so who cares [about the Spider-Man reboots]?”

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield

Emma and Andrew shared many cute moments throughout their four-year relationship, and we’re still bummed about their 2015 breakup.

The pair met on the set of Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man and started dating in 2011. On the filming experience, Andrew told MTV News, “We got on really well as people, in between [takes]. That was the fun stuff: In between, we’d just mess around, and I felt, ‘Ah, this is different.'” Emma echoed his sentiment, telling Teen Vogue, “Meeting Andrew, and working with Andrew … was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had.”

The two continued to date, giving the world small glimpses into their relationship with red carpet photo-ops, a memorable trip to Disneyland, and even the sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 before they eventually ended their relationship due to scheduling conflicts that made it hard to spend time together. The pair has remained friendly since their breakup, supporting each other during award show circuits and catching up on occasion.

Zendaya and Tom Holland

Unlike their Spider-Man couple forbearers, it took years for Zendaya and Tom’s relationship to develop past the point of friendship. Romance rumours began circulating as early as 2017 thanks to their performance in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but both have insisted they’re just friends. Since then, we’ve watched the two star in one of the best Lip Sync Battles of all time, film the sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home, and even date other people!

Both have always been supportive of each other’s careers with Tom telling British GQ that he credits Zendaya with helping him adjust to celebrity life and that he is “so proud of what she has accomplished with Euphoria and also Malcom & Marie.” Zendaya returned the praise in an interview with Esquire, explaining that she was “super impressed” with his performance in Cherry, noting that “he took on the challenge beautifully.”

Cut to today, where photo evidence seems to confirm everything we’ve been hoping for. Though neither has publicly commented on their relationship status, Zendaya may have given us a small inside look with this now-deleted Twitter post. In the meantime, we’ve got our fingers crossed that this Spider-Man romance lasts.
