A Twilight Saga TV Series Is Reportedly in the Works
Well, Twilight fans: looks like the wolf’s out of the bag. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a TV adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling book series is currently in the works at Lionsgate Television, per sources.
The series is reportedly in early development with very few confirmed details, including a network/platform or a writer, but insiders told THR that Meyer is expected to be involved. Wyck Godfrey and former Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Copresident Erik Feig are also said to be attached to executive produce the television project. Reps for Lionsgate did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s request for comment.
Meyer’s Twilight series became a groundbreaking pop culture phenomenon in the mid-2000s that produced five blockbuster movies – “Twilight,” “New Moon,” “Eclipse,” and “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” and “Part 2” – starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner. The franchise’s fandom launched each actor to stardom, and the film series itself grossed over $3.4 billion worldwide, per THR. Some of the franchise’s stars have reunited in the years since the peak of their movies’ pandemonium, the most recent being Stewart and Rami Malek (who plays Benjamin in “Breaking Dawn – Part 2”) at the 2022 Oscars.
After the film franchise concluded in 2012, Meyer released another book as part of the Twilight series: 2020’s “Midnight Sun,” which retells the events of the first book from Edward Cullen’s (played by Pattinson in the movies) perspective. That same year, the author teased plans for more books in the saga to USA Today, telling the outlet, “There are two more books I think in the world that I want to write.” She added, “I have got them outlined and a chapter written I think of the first one, so I know it’s there,” though she also said, “I am not ready to do that right now. I want to do something brand new.”
Right now, it’s unclear if the forthcoming Twilight show will include any of the original movie stars. However, it’s not the only fantasy-book-to-movie franchise getting the TV treatment. On April 12, Max officially confirmed plans for a Harry Potter TV series described as a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s popular book series.
