Soma Sutton has clapped back at The Voice coaches as not "genuine" with their feedback, after she lost her Playoff against Stephanie Cole.
Soma performed Brandy and Monica's "The Boy Is Mine", including a self-devised rap, in her Playoff last night against Stephanie, who sang "Show Me Love" by Robin S.
Afterwards, Soma's former coach, Kelly Rowland, complained that Soma had not shown off her rapping skills when she was in her team. Delta Goodrem, meanwhile, said that while Soma was a unique and interesting singer, she wasn't "performing" yet. Her coach Guy Sebastian offered that he was proud of how Soma had grown as an artist in the last week.
But he chose to take Stephanie Cole into the next round of the competition, because he believed she would truly benefit from the Voice experience. Guy told Soma that he thought she needed time to work on herself and her music, outside of the parameters of the show.
Soma's response to his critique was all-time sass: "I didn't even really want to come on the show in the first place, and I was convinced to come here.
"It is disheartening," she added. "Your advice that you guys all give: is it genuine? . . . I just would like to know what you really think. Do I actually have what it takes to be a musician?"
Kelly encouraged Soma to take a deep breath, before telling her that she and the other coaches wouldn't "waste their time" sharing dishonest criticism.
Soma tried to explain that she felt the issue was that the coaches didn't "have enough time to get to know me": "You don't know why I'm in my shell . . ."
Guy then explained that a coach can only "dive in" as much as an artist allows them to: "If you don't tell me what stops you from being the artist you need to be, what can I do?"
I think you've got something very specIal, but you have to trust and you have to deal with the things that are holding you back."
Soma's questioning meant that she definitely wasn't going to earn Guy's wildcard spot, which instead went to Matt Gresham.
Originally in Team Kelly, Soma lost in the Battles rounds to Lyric McFarland, when they each sang "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse, but she was saved by Guy.
In last night's episode, Soma said she was "relieved" to join Team Guy. She said she wasn't impressed by Kelly's song choice: "I didn't think that I got a good enough opportunity to show Australia what I actually sound like."
Guy pinpointed that she seemed to be suffering from nerves in the Battles, which Soma noted was down to anxiety she developed from past traumatic experiences. Later, Soma said that she was glad to be performing with a "coach who I know has my back".
"Be unashamed of who you are," Guy stressed. "You've got a really unique voice and I want as many people to hear you be Soma and be comfortable."
On Instagram after the episode, Soma thanked her fans for their "ongoing love and support" and her Playoff partner, Stephanie, as well as the coaches for giving her an opportunity on The Voice. "I'm proud to have made it this far by staying true to myself and always being perceptive," she reflected.
"These things can be hard to navigate, as an artist and as a coach, but I'm glad I asked the questions I did. It's a Huge deal to stand up there on national tv and sing your little heart out!!"
