A team on Channel 7's House Rules: High Stakes, which premiered on Monday, have already quit the show — a first for the long-running home reno reality series.
Carly and Andrew left the show on Tuesday night's episode, sending a text to a producer: "We have woken up this morning and packing our bags and leaving. We are not interested in talking to cameras or filming anything this morning. For your reference we have purchased side tables with our own account money and will be taking them with us. Andrew."
The couple were one of eight teams challenged with renovating a 32-storey penthouse hotel on the Gold Coast, before they would moving on to renovate each other's homes.
The producer waited for them in the lobby to ask if they were OK. "If you want to leave, I'm not standing in your way," he stressed, as Carly attempted to walk away. "We've made a decision this morning not to go back to the renovation site," explained Andrew.
The producer didn't request that they stay, but said that they needed to understand why the couple was leaving. "We came on this show because it was House Rules as we knew it," Carly complained.
To camera, Carly said that she had been put off by the early season twist to eliminate two teams before home renovations even began. "I'm not a quitter, but this game has changed a lot . . . It's not what I expected at all.
"I signed up for House Rules as I knew it, not as it is now."
While the producer tried to say that TV series formats change all the time, Andrew pushed back that they would've declined to appear on the series if they'd known they would need to renovate a hotel.
Continuing to camera, Carly said she hadn't been able to give their assigned space that "wow factor" in the allotted time. "We knew we were getting eliminated anyway," she told the producer. "I'd rather have my dignity and self-respect and leave on my own terms than money."
Carly and Andrew were promoted as a rule-breaking married couple from Queensland. "[We] believe if you play by the rules . . . You miss all the fun!," they wrote on their official House Rules Instagram page, which has already been taken down.
In the lead-up to the series, Andrew boasted about his construction knowledge, while Carly also said that she has "an eye for interior design" and "a passion and desire for dressing up homes and showcasing them".
Host Jamie Durie told the rest of the cast about Carly and Andrew's departure, and informed them that two teams would still be leaving the series before home renovations started.
House Rules: High Stakes airs at 7 p.m. on Channel Seven, Sunday to Wednesday.
