Spider-Man Producer Amy Pascal Says a 4th Movie Starring Tom Holland and Zendaya Is in the Works
It’s been almost two years since “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was released in December 2021, which delighted fans with the return of Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon as Peter Parker, MJ, and Ned. Plus, the appearances of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire as other Peter Parkers, as well as Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe as their iconic villains. The movie was the perfect way to close out such an epic trilogy, but it left fans wondering about Holland’s future in the MCU. Now, finally, fans can be comforted knowing a fourth Spider-man movie starring Holland (and Zendaya) is on the way.
Speaking with Variety in May 2023, Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal shared that a fourth film with the stars is definitely in the works, but it’s on hold amid the ongoing WGA writers’ strike. “Are we going to make another movie? Of course, we are,” Pascal explained. “We’re in the process, but the writers’ strike, nobody is working during the strike. We’re all being supporters and whenever they get themselves together, we’ll get started.” Reps for Pascal did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s request for confirmation.
There’s still been no official word on whether Holland or Zendaya have signed a new deal with Marvel and Sony to star in the project that’s currently in development. So while we wait for official confirmation, check out what Pascal and Holland have said about the latter returning as the world’s most famous webslinger.
Amy Pascal’s Quotes About Tom Holland Playing Spider-Man in a Fourth Movie
In November 2021, a month before the release of “No Way Home,” Pascal told Fandango that Holland will reprise his role as Peter in at least one more film, which could turn into a whole new movie trilogy. “This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie,” Pascal said. “We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.”
But speaking to Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of “No Way Home” in December 2021, Pascal walked back her previous comments and said nothing had been confirmed yet. “As long as [Holland] wants to make Spider-Man movies, we will make Spider-Man movies,” she explained. “But I’m a producer, and I always think everything is going to work out. If I have my way, we will.”
Does Tom Holland Want to Be in a Fourth Spider-Man Movie?
As for Holland, his comments suggest his future as Spider-Man is still up in the air. Holland previously told Entertainment Weekly in an October 2021 interview that he and the rest of the cast treated “No Way Home” as “the end” of the franchise since it wraps up Peter’s story that begins with “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
“I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy,” he said. “We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [‘No Way Home’] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”
Holland also revealed he, Zendaya, and Batalon got emotional while filming the latest Spider-Man film since their future in the MCU remained uncertain. “So this one scene, [we didn’t know] if this would be the last time [we were all working together.] [It] was heartbreaking but also really exciting because we’re all moving into the next chapter of our careers,” he said. “So sharing that moment with them was maybe the best day I’ve ever had on set. I don’t think I’ve cried like that ever.”
That same month, Holland told Empire that he hadn’t signed on for another Spider-Man movie yet. “It’s the first time since I got cast as Spider-Man that I don’t have a contract,” he said. Later, in a Nov. 17 interview with GQ, Holland suggested that although it may have been time to “move on” from the franchise, Marvel could do a film focusing on Miles Morales, another iteration of Spider-Man featured in the comics and the animated Spider-Verse franchise.
“If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong,” said Holland, who is now 27 years old. Still, Holland has not shut down the possibility of returning. After Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige revealed he also wanted Holland back as Spider-Man for more movies, Holland told Entertainment Tonight in December 2021: “Well, that’s great news. That’s awesome. Kevin is the king. Amy is the queen. They’re like my parents. I love them to bits. And if they’ll have me back, I’ll be there.”
Fans are crossing their fingers hoping Holland will return as Spidey again, and while there’s no concrete answer yet, it seems all signs point to the answer being yes.
