This is definitely the droid we’ve been looking for, if by droid you mean news on The Mandalorian. Back in April, Variety revealed that the Disney+ series had already begun preproduction on the third installment, less than six months after season two was announced!

Sources told Variety that series creator Jon Favreau has been “writing season three for a while” and that concepts for the next chapter have been in the works for a “few weeks,” led by Lucasfilm Vice President and Executive Creative Director Doug Chiang. It’s not surprising that the streamer would want to jump into the show’s next installment, given the Star Wars spinoff has been universally well-received by fans and stars alike. We won’t even get into the mania kicked off by Baby Yoda.

On Oct. 16, Favreau delved further into the plans for season three, telling Variety that the series is “on schedule” to start production after Pascal finishes shooting in Europe for his upcoming film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent with Nicolas Cage. The creator credited The Mandalorian‘s unique production techniques, digital work, and use of masks for a majority of the characters for being able to keep them on schedule for their production. “We’re a show that’s probably well-equipped to be flexible based on the protocols that are emerging surrounding work restarting,” he said.

Season two of The Mandalorian wrapped in early March, luckily just before the coronavirus pandemic halted numerous productions and delayed premiere dates for both films and TV shows. Fans can look forward to catching up with Mando and Baby Yoda as they fly off in search of the latter’s home planet when Disney+ debuts season two on Oct. 30, and then we can figure out what to expect when season three comes along!
