Striped tees were here, there and EVERYWHERE in 2010. Not that they're a new phenomenon, as the humble sailor striped tee has been kicking around since Brigitte Bardot made them famous back in the 50s — but there was something instantly modern about the preppy-but-cool basic this time around. Graphic, clean and uncomplicated; we embraced this wardrobe staple with open arms and teamed it with everything from jeans a la Kate Moss, to printed skirts like Whitney Port, or with chic pinafores as Alexa Chung did.
Originally the uniform of French fishermen, the Breton tee was turned into a chic womenswear staple by none other than Coco Chanel. Navy or white with white were the stripes of choice, and this year saw the striped tee rise from a wardrobe basic to a must-have trend piece. I know I have about five different incarnations at home, and still turn to a Breton tee when I want to add a certain preppy je ne sais quoi to an ensemble. If you don't own one, we suggest you do! After all the stripey tee is the 2010 Saw Everywhere And Still Bought Two award recipient.
