Arabella Ramsay designer Q & A

Fashion Insider Q & A: Arabella Ramsay

I'm a huge fan of Melbourne designer Arabella Ramsay's rock-folk inspired clothing and was so excited to chat with her about her latest collection — Nomadic Intellect. Check out what she had to say about her infamous leather pieces, Bertie Blackman, and opening a store in Sydney.

Your Winter ’10 collection has a nomadic theme, filled with boho skirts and layered separates. What inspired you this season?
The nomadic theme is very much about wanderlust women travelling all corners on the earth for the spirit of adventure. The nomadic intellects traverse the hippy trail, collecting Indian pashminas in duffle bags and filling their journals with worldly tales.

I always look out for your leather and denim pieces, they seem to feature in each collection. What’s your favourite leather and denim piece you’ve ever designed?
Hard question as they seem to get better with each season. I have such a huge following for the leather, one of my ultimate pieces would be the Allie 3/4 little cropped black jacket. I wear it with absolutely everything, in summer with dresses and then in winter with a cashmere boyfriend jumper underneath.

Are there any celebrities you’d love to see sporting your label (or have already)?
You know I always like the really inconspicuous ones... like Bertie Blackman. She wandered into my store and at the time we didn’t realize it was her. She bought the best things. It was so nice to see and her music is great. read more

You have a stand-alone store in Melbourne, any plans to open in Sydney?
Of course I am actually looking at sites at the moment. I think there is a real need for quirky unique stores up there rather than your mainstream labels.

You’ve ventured into homewares, which I adore, will you be expanding this line or is your main focus always clothing?
My main focus is always clothing but when I get sick of fashion I tend to dabble into other creative areas like homewares, illustration and cooking... Would love to open a café one day and have exhibitions of my illustrations.

Any plans for an online store?
Currently we have just gone live with The Grand Social and are getting a great response!

Are you a magazine or fashion blog/site type of gal? What are some of your faves?
I do love a mix of both. Online I like Frenchy Garance Doré, The Sartorialist, and for a good shop Net-a-Porter.
