Dion Lee was announced as the winner of the L'Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival Designer Award last night. The young designer was presented with a cheque for $10,000 from Woolmark and will have the opportunity to head to either Florence or Paris to meet an extensive network of international contacts inlcuding mills and fabric suppliers as a guest of Woolmark. He was also presented with a 12 month subscription to international trend forecasting site WGSN.
The Award has helped launch the careers of successful designers in the past such as Romance Was Born, Toni Maticevski and Josh Goot, and provides ongoing support for designer's in their first five years of business. Other finalists considered for the 2010 award include Gail Sorronda, Gary Bigeni, Konstantina Mittas and Therese Rawsthorne. Festival director Karen Webster said choosing a winner was tough, but Dion Lee's "standard of design, innovation and professionalism was exceptional...a real force to be reckoned with."
