2012 MBFWA: By Johnny
We have to admit, it was the pretty prints on the MBFWA invite that peaked our interest in the By Johnny Spring/Summer 2012-13 show. Not that we weren't already aware of Project Runway runner up Johnny Schembri, of course. As we hoped, the distinctive hand-drawn Florence Broadhurst-esque floral featured in his fashion week showcase, paired beautifully with scribble-filled stripes to dazzling effect. The dresses were the kind that make the most of the female form; fitted at the waist, ladylike in length, a touch sexy thanks to carefully placed cut-outs, and with this season's flirtiest extra — a hip exaggerating (or hiding, depending on what you'd prefer) peplum. Such a femme line-up may sound predictable but thanks to Johnny's unique prints and clean silhouettes, it was a modern, cool and unexpected take on the ladylike look. Watch this space, we think Mr Schembi will be around for a while.
