Why Tibi Is the Grimms' Fairy Tale of Fashion Week
The Tibi Fall 2014 show was like a fairy tale. Not the kind with glittering ball gowns and glass slippers, but more so like we'd all been transported to a faraway land where fantasy and reality collided — and clothes took on new, previously unimaginable forms. The world that designer Amy Smilovic created was serene in tone with lots of blacks, creams, grays, and blues, and it came with plenty of cosy mohair sweaters and fuzzy textured mules to go around. But as in any good story, there were moments that cut through the softness, like with the sharp lines of the wide-brimmed black felt hats.
Buzziest and most unlikely of all were the two pairs of trousers that featured a front-side-only pleated "skirt." Another double take moment: a thick red wool coatdress with a layered construction that made it seem as if another identical coat was tied around its waist. Or was it? Like the most intriguing characters in a true fairy tale, these pieces were not what they seemed.
