Why Alexander Wang Got the Head Job at Balenciaga

Alexander Wang Wasted No Time Diving Into Balenciaga's Archives

The fashion world is still aflutter after confirmation that Alexander Wang will indeed be taking Nicholas Ghesquiere's job at revered French fashion house Balenciaga. Wang, who is known for his down-town, cool-kid NYC aesthetic was very keen to immerse himself in the Balenciaga archives, telling Isabelle Guichot, chief executive officer of Balenciaga, "I want to see the archives. I want to understand the culture behind the brand.’”

This earnest respect for the label's history may have help land Wang the gig, with Guichot saying of the appointment, "We wanted someone with global thinking, a citizen of the world, and someone who could understand the digital world and the direction of fashion and retail tomorrow" as well as "someone with an understanding of the" “technical culture” and craftsmanship of the house.” Wang is set to start work immediately on Balenciaga's A/W '13 collection which will be shown, in some capacity, at Paris Fashion week in February of next year.
