Zimmermann Hits the NYFW Runway
Is it just us, or is Zimmermann one of the highlights of New York Fashion Week? While, yes, we are major fans of Phillip Lim, and Alexander Wang will always get our vote (and credit card details), there's something so feminine about every single piece in the Zimmermann collection. Plus, there's the little fact that this big name was Made In Australia.
While we admittedly prefer having the homegrown label on the local schedule, Zimmermann's presence in the US is growing by the minute. "We've always had a really great response in the US," designer Nicky Zimmermann told POPSUGAR Australia. And if you need proof that this label is one of our biggest exports, remember this: Zimmermann recently expanded their flagship US store to a bigger, better boutique, located on Mercer Street. The NYC store is Zimmermann's biggest worldwide, and is in pretty impressive company, nestled amongst other big names like A.P.C, Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang.
So what sets Zimmermann apart from the dozens of fledgling fashion brands trying to make it big in New York? "Our aesthetic is very different to what other designers do in the US. We’re obviously influenced a lot by where we come from and people seem to enjoy our approach to colour and print and the optimistic approach to our collections. I think since we've had our own stores in New York and LA over the last few years that it’s really helped paint more of a picture of what we do and what Zimmermann is about," Nicky said.
Front row at this season's show was a cool round-up of Australia's most stylish women, with Lara Bingle, Nicole Trunfio, Emma Lung and Harper's Bazaar US executive editor Laura Brown keen to get close to the action on the runway. But, Nicky would happily do a little switch with the front row: "I just wish I could be front row at one of our shows for once. As a designer you spend all this time and energy working on a collection and you never get to see the show how everyone else sees it," she joked.
Nicky says the collection, titled 'Cloud Stompers', is brighter than your ordinary Fall line: "It's very textural, colour and prints are very rich and there is a lot of intricate detailing combining metals and fabric."
