The term ‘coastal cowgirl’ now has nearly 52 million views on TikTok, and, with warmer weather around the corner for the US and Europe, that number is likely to continue to grow. So, when it comes to dressing in a coastal cowgirl aesthetic, what exactly does that mean?

TikToker @madeline.hagmann says the essentials for nailing the style are a neutral cowgirl boot, in beige, brown or white, a light-knit jumper and a midi dress “that makes you want to frolic in a field”. Other pieces that’ll help you tap into the style are tank tops for layering, white or blue denim cut-offs and a denim midi or maxi skirt. Finally, she advises you pick an oversized, linen button-down shirt, a baseball cap and a belt that’s “Western but not too Western”.

TikToker @rachspeed shared that jewellery and accessories are also an important part of the trend and that she interprets it as including pearl drop earrings, puka shell bracelets and DIY beaded necklaces.

While that does sound like a lot, to break it down, essentially, coastal cowgirl is mixing typical Southern American staples like denim and cowboy boots and hats with pieces you’d typically wear at the beach — think linen tops and floaty dresses. The trend encourages the mixing of textures and tends to skew on the lighter side.

Another TikToker, @abbeysadleir, says in a video that while the style is “super cute”, she as a 27-year-old wouldn’t wear most of the items people are wearing in posts about it. Plus, she says, she doesn’t live near the beach, so her striving for the look is already a stretch. She came up with a solution, though, for how to get the coastal cowgirl trend.

“You know last season, it was the ‘coastal grandmother’?,” @abbeysadleir says TikToker. “I’m thinking, how we do ‘coastal cowgirl’ if we’re over the age of 25, is if we do ‘coastal grandmother’ and ‘coastal grandmother’ combined? Like an actual nice sweater and some linen pants — linen is key for this coastal look. And then Western accessories, you’re going for a hat or boot. Big chunky sweater and a boot.”
