Women’s charity Share the Dignity are leaders in Australia when it comes to supporting women and girls through period poverty, boosting the conversation to government and mainstream media, installing 320 Dignity Vending Machines filled with free menstruation products in public schools and hospitals around Australia and creating initiatives like #ItsInTheBag to help provide essential items to those in need.
They also have an online store. Called Dress for Dignity, it’s Australia’s first 100% charitable pre-loved online fashion store and it works basically like an online op-shop, with all proceeds going directly back into Share the Dignity.
Australia reports sending a whopping 800,000 tonnes of textiles waste to landfill each year. Dress for Dignity marries sustainable fashion with the ever-prevalent issue of poverty in Australia by providing a sustainable shopping platform that supports women and girls in need.
“The idea for Dress for Dignity came out of COVID when all the charity stores had to shut and no one had a place to donate their preloved clothes,” says Share the Dignity managing director, Rochelle Courtenay.
“The concept of Dress for Dignity is for those who have loved a fashion item, it’s still in great condition but would love to add something new to their wardrobe, so they list the fashion item on Dress for Dignity, knowing that the sale proceeds will help a woman in need. We also hope that same woman buys her next fashion item for her wardrobe from the website too.”
Therefore, it makes total sense that Dress for Dignity is taking part in the Green Friday sales, offering 30% off the entire site, from Monday, November 21 – Friday, 25 November.
So, What Is Green Friday?
While you’re likely familiar with Black Friday and its many spin-offs, Click Frenzy, Singles Day and Cyber Monday, all of which make online shopping in the lead-up to Christmas pretty fun — there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Green Friday.
The four-day event is in its second year this year, encouraging Australian shoppers to shop sustainable and ethical offers, with consideration and mindfulness. It highlights Australian retailers and brands who operate within the sustainable, recommerce or circular economy space. Shoppers can rest assured they’re buying from participating brands that have low-impact at the forefront of their business morals and values.
Green Friday is an incredible opportunity to buy from local and sustainable brands at super affordable prices.
