I Tried the DIY Tie-Dye Hack Trending on TikTok and it Was Surprisingly Easy
Tie-dye — aka the unofficial uniform for the counterculture in the late 60s and 70s — has declared a huge comeback this year. When you consider the current social and political climate, it's not hard to understand why the trend synonymous with rebellion is rearing its head and making its way back into wardrobes everywhere. This pattern is not just seeping into tees this time, but sweatsuits, socks, pyjamas and face masks too, giving 2020 the colourful, positive face-lift it so desperately needs.
With more time at home than ever, celebrities (Bella Hadid, we're looking at you!) and influencers have embraced their creative sides and DIY'd their own tie-dye creations. This has especially taken off within the TikTok community with the likes of @dyesigns and @bianca_marie2 sharing their tie-dye how-tos with the masses, and in some cases, even starting their own online businesses to take custom orders.
Intrigued by the craft, I set out on a shopping trip for coloured fabric dye and a basic white tee. Then, by following the lead of some of my favourite TikTokers, I created my own funky rainbow spiral tee.
A tip for first timers: The main difficulty I encountered was getting the dye to soak into the material, as the droplets sat stubbornly on top and required encouragement before soaking in. After some research (experienced tie-dyers will be shaking their heads) the lesson was that you want the garment to be wet — but not dripping — when tie-dying to allow the dye to soak in easier.
