One of the easiest ways I’ve found to look put together is to wear a matching set. Whether it’s a blazer and matching slacks for work or a linen top and same-material shorts for the weekend, I always find that wearing matching sets makes me look polished — even if I’ve literally just thrown it on in a hurry before heading out the door.

It’s no surprise then that my closet is filled with matching sets. What I didn’t realised when I started stocking my wardrobe with them, though, is how many other outfit combinations the two piecescan create. I mean, it sounds obvious, but it hadn’t even occurred to me that I could wear them separately — I’d thought they could only be worn together.

All this brings to me to one of my new favourite matching set. It’s by Australian brand SELF. the label and consists of The Ocupado Top in Pewter ($65) and The Soiree Skirt in Pewter ($85). Made with a buttery soft, semi-sheer fabric and with a lettuce hem, the top is long-sleeved with a hole for my thumb. Meanwhile, the maxi skirt shares the top’s same fabric and hem. It’s definitely Y2K, but still classic enough not to look dated when you see it in a few years’ time.

While it looked great as a set, I also tried the top with a pair of loose jeans and heels, and with a black skirt and flats. The maxi skirt I tried with a tie-front, linen top and slides, and found the resulting outfit perfect for weekend brunch. The outfit combinations with the set seemed endless — you could dress it up and down. And I find that true of any matching set, really.

If you too are ready to harness the power of a matching set and create seemingly endless outfit combinations, I’ve put that set, plus some other cute set options I’m currently loving below for you to try. Just keep scrolling.
