The events of last year saw the cancellation of the Met Gala in 2020. The event’s organisers were hopeful the Costume Institute Gala could go ahead, but even after postponing the event, the exhibition which opens annually with the help of the world’s biggest and best dressed celebs, was ultimately cancelled.

But it’s a new year, and in 2021, the Met Gala is back with a vengeance. The event will take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on September 18, 2021, and now, the theme has been announced: ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion‘.

Designers and attendees can adapt this how they like, but we can expect to see looks from classic American fashion houses like Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, as well as newcomers like Virgil Abloh and Prabal Gurung.

The ‘In America’ exhibition is one in a duo of themes for the 2021 event. The Second part is titled ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion’, and is set to show at the Met in 2022

The Met Gala usually happens in May, but the first Monday of the month also happens to be Labour Day in the US this year. That, and the fact it would be near-impossible for designers to create the masterpiece garments we’re so eager to see our fave celebs don in just one month.

Details are thin on the ground right now, but a source close to Page Six says poet Amanda Gorman and CFDA chairman Tom Ford may host alongside Anna Wintour.
