Met Gala 2024 Theme: Garden of Time

The museum has revealed that the exhibition will showcase 250 historically significant pieces, dubbed ‘sleeping beauties’ for their delicate nature. Among these treasures are original designs from iconic names like Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Hubert de Givenchy.

But this exhibition isn’t just about admiring beautiful garments from the past. It celebrates fashion’s deep-rooted connection to nature and calls for sustainability in the industry. The ‘Garden of Time’ theme serves as a poignant reminder of the need to preserve our planet for future generations.

Andrew Bolton, the curator, describes the exhibition as “an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion”. Divided into three zones land, sea, and sky each section will symbolise the materials used in creating the garments.

Additionally, approximately 250 items will be on display, including rare treasures like an Elizabethan bodice and a silk satin ball gown from 1877 by Charles Frederick Worth. The Met plans to use video animation, light projection, and other cutting-edge technologies to enhance the experience.

What Is the Met Gala?


The annual event is a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, presided over by the one and only Anna Wintour. Additionally, with a different theme every year, the Met Gala has become one of the most anticipated events in the fashion calendar.

Frequently hailed as the ‘Oscars of fashion’, this event attracts the crème de la crème of A-list celebrities. Attendees grace the red carpet adorned in custom creations, meticulously crafted by the industry’s most influential fashion designers.

The ball raises millions for the Costume Institute at the Met, funding its annual exhibition. Also, tickets bought by designers and brands, cost around $35,000 each, with tables priced between $200,000 and $300,000.

When Is the 2024 Met Gala?

Every year, the Met Gala takes place on the first Monday in May. However, in 2024, organisers have scheduled the event for May 6 (May 7 for us Aussies), and it will be hosted at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
