Mini Skirts Are Getting More Micro By the Day, and We’re Lapping it Up

Since the re-emergence of the mini skirt — strutting down the Miu Miu runway at ’21 Paris Fashion Week — we’ve come a long way.

What started with remnants of teenage-born trauma, thanks to years of idolising rake thin ‘it’ girls rock minis and literally no one else — has turned into a versatile and fresh re-imagined trend.

We’ve seen minis paired back with vests for something more tailored, layered with knee high boots and chunky grandma knit throughout the cooler months, worn over colour-blocked tights and most recently, in utility and sports-luxe styles.

And something we can’t help but notice? They seem to be getting shorter by the day.

At Mugler’s 2023 RTW New York Fashion Week show, multiple micro mini skirts came down the runway. Designed with denim in an almost wrap style, the skirts were itty-bitty, with a street edge to them.

Then, we see fashion muses like Julia Fox, strutting around the streets of NYC wearing a micro leather skirt, paired with a chunky jacket and boots with fur detailing.

And while some seem to be leaning into showing as much midriff as possible, designers like Brandon Maxwell have been dipping into a clean layered look — where the micro skirt plays a small (but pivotal) role.

No fabrication or texture is off-limits when it comes to mini and micro skirts. Everything from denim, to leather, to glow-mesh and silk have been seen amongst on-trend looks.
