POPSUGAR Australia: Why did you start Nomads Cove?
Ali McNiven: As a Gold Coast-born beach baby, I have always hoarded a collection of bikinis. After I moved to Sydney I was having a conversation with a friend about how we both loved discovering and purchasing new swimwear labels we found on Instagram. The issue was we had to go to 10 different online stores to look at 10 brands, all while comparing their individual size guides, stock availability, shipping and returns policy. After that initial conversation and talking to other women who had experienced the same problem, I realised that there was a clear gap in the market for a swim-specific online store that sold these boutique swimwear designers I loved following.
PS: What were you doing before you launched it?
AM: I was previously working in PR at a health and lifestyle communications agency. I had the idea for Nomads Cove lingering in the back of mind for a long time before I finally decided to investigate it further.
PS: What did you study (if anything)?
AM: I studied a Bachelor of Business and Communications. Having a business background was very valuable. Once I figured out the general concept of the business, I wrote a full business plan which really helped provide a framework to get started. I knew spending time in that early phase carefully going through each step of the business would help me see if it was viable or not. Having said all that, there's nothing that can really prepare you to go out on your own other than hitting the ground running, making mistakes and learning from other people.
