Here Are 2022’s Biggest Sunglasses Trends to Shop For Mum This Mother’s Day

Sunglass Hut

Sunglasses are having a moment right now. More than ever before, they’re turning up on red carpets, with celebrities embracing sunglasses trends that put a modern spin on Y2K classics and tried and true styles that suit all face shapes.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner (it’s on May 8), it’s officially your last call to find a gift that will make Mum’s day. Our favourite presents are the ones that straddle the line between genuinely useable and chic — and, of course, they must spark joy all year round.

Sunglasses tick all of those boxes for us because it doesn’t matter if she’s adventurous in both shape and colour, or sits on the more conservative end of the spectrum with her style — there’s something she will love. One place that has it all is Sunglass Hut, with a mix of high-end designer sunglasses and on-trend affordable options, both in-store and online.

Oversized Frames

Oversized frames are a huge trend for 2022, but in a more refined way than you may have seen in the past. Not the blow-fly aesthetic of the early noughties, picture a ‘70s style silhouette that makes oversized sunglasses as flattering as they’ve ever been, with structured shapes and barely-there frames, a la Jennifer Lopez. Depending on how adventurous your mum is, opting for tinted lenses, like the Burberry Daphne ($327), or all-black frames, like the Prada Symbole ($555), are equally chic ways to embrace oversized frames.

Modern Classics

This year, timeless shapes like wireframe glasses and the classic wayfarer are getting a serious upgrade. The Ray-Ban Hexagonal Frames ($285) are a discreet modern spin on the wireframe style, adding a bit of interest without any distinguishable trend that will date. For a more extreme modern slant, the Ray-Ban Stories ($449) take the wayfarer style and add in-built cameras that let you film your adventures straight from your glasses.

Slimline

Thanks to TikTok, Y2K fashion is here to stay and, yes, that also extends to your eyewear. Slimline frames like those worn by Julia Roberts in Notting Hill and Rachel Green in Friends are huge this year and we couldn’t be more grateful that the teeny tiny sunglasses of years past have been upgraded with thicker sides that are genuinely flattering. Our favourites of the season (and the ones we’re sure your mum will love) are the Hailey Bieber X Vogue Eyewear Tortoiseshell Sunglasses ($146), which are available exclusively at Sunglass Hut, and for a more adventurous take on the slimline trend, these Valentino frames ($390).

Cat-Eye

Cat-eye sunglasses resurfaced a few years ago, and in 2022, they’re here to stay. This year, cat-eye sunglasses are more angular, wider, and more wearable. For Mum, we love a cat-eye that errs on the side of rectangular, in either plain black acetate or a tortoiseshell pattern, like the Burberry Daisy Sunglasses ($409), but if she’s more adventurous, the Duo-Tone Miu Miu Sunglasses ($327) is a great option, too.

Oval Frames

A retro-classic trend that comes back into style time and again, circular-shaped sunglasses suit most face shapes, as long as you choose the right size frame. This year, it’s all about oval frames that are best worn in bright, block colours. Frames like this have been spotted on Gigi Hadid and if you want the same look for yourself, the Versace Acetate Sunglasses ($391) are the perfect pair to achieve the style. At the other end of the spectrum, smaller wireframe styles that mark the return of Y2K minimalism have been fully embraced by the likes of Jesinta Franklin. We love the Ray-Ban Oval Sunglasses ($275).
