Emma Stone's Diet For Battle of the Sexes

The Smoothie Emma Stone Drank Daily While Training For Battle of the Sexes

It took months of training to prepare Emma Stone to play the role of a lifetime: legendary tennis player and former World No. 1 Billie Jean King in the much-anticipated movie Battle of the Sexes, which is set to be released on Sept. 22. She got the word that she landed this role smack dab in the middle of filming of La La Land, so she had to quickly transition from the slender dancer's frame she cultivated to the stronger figure of a professional athlete.

POPSUGAR spoke with celebrity trainer and founder of Rise Nation, Jason Walsh, who worked with Emma for three months and helped her put on 6 kilos of pure muscle. Although they had to significantly switch up her fitness routine — she did very little cardio and lots of heavy weights — her diet was just as important of a factor in her incredible transformation.

Jason said they had to "increase her caloric count" in order to aid in healthy muscle growth. Since she was already a healthy eater, this is what they did to tack on extra calories and protein: "We added in shakes," Jason told POPSUGAR. "These shakes were high-calorie shakes, where we would use a really, really good-tasting protein. It has to taste good. If it doesn't taste good, you're never gonna do it."

Emma's daily smoothie was made with Metabolic Drive, a whey protein powder that apparently tastes like a milkshake. Jason said this product "helps increase metabolism" and is "probably the best-tasting shake" out there.

The other product Jason swears by is Udo's Oil, a supplement of omega fatty acids (from flax, sesame, sunflower seeds, etc.) and healthy fats (MCTs from coconut oil). According to Jason, this is a "superhealthy fat that you're putting into your body to aid in the production of all the hormones and muscle cells." He told POPSUGAR it's "too bad that people are so afraid of fats," because that's where you get the high-octane energy you need to develop muscle and burn fat.

Jason also named Hanah One as one of Emma's daily smoothie ingredients. It's an Ayurvedic superfood supplement made with ashwagandha, turmeric, and 30 wild-harvested botanicals. He said extreme athletes who climb Mount Everest consume this on a regular basis, since it's a "great way to help the body recover from stress."

Additionally, they threw a handful of spinach and some almond milk into the blender to complete Emma's shake. "Naturally your metabolism will go up" if you drink a concoction like this, Jason told POPSUGAR.

It was much easier for Emma to drink these extra calories and additional nutrition, since it can be difficult to eat this much extra food in addition to your normal diet. But Emma had no problem tossing back these shakes every day, and it's clear to see that making this dietary change really paid off.
