What Is It?
Combining low-impact exercise and good nutrition with advanced vacuum technology, Hypoxi delivers targeted weight loss by encouraging your body’s natural fat-burning system to “work smarter, not harder”. According to the Hypoxi website, independent studies have shown Hypoxi to be up to three times more effective at targeted fat burning than regular exercise. On average, noticeable changes occur over a one-month period — we're talking a loss of 15-30 centimetres over 12 sessions!
Located in Martin Place inside the Goodlife gym, you’ll have to sign in as a visitor to the gym and then head upstairs to find the actual studio. Once inside you’ll be greeted by a friendly staff member who will get you set up on the machines. No thinking required, the staff do everything for you — except pedalling, that’s all on you.
NOTE: Hypoxi studios are located nationwide. This review was of the Martin Place studio. Visit hypoxi.com.au for a studio near you!
At the Martin Place studio you’ll find the Vacunaut (a suit designed to target stubborn fat around the hips and thighs) and the S120 (it's all about focusing on stubborn fat and cellulite around the hips, bottom, thighs, lower back and lower stomach). You can choose to use only the S120 machine at a cheaper price, but for even better results, both machines are recommended.
The Vacunaut is the most relaxing. It sees you zipped up in what feels like a heavy-duty onesie. For 20 minutes you lay down and let the suit (and tubes attached to a machine) massage your lower body while the air is sucked out of the suit. It’s a strange sensation but the idea is to stimulate the targeted areas so the next machine — the S120 — can work even better.
Once 20 minutes is up, it's time for the sweaty part. The S120 is a pressurised capsule with pedals inside. You sit on the seat and, like a bike, pedal for 30 minutes at a low-intensity pace, which is decided for you based on your measurements, goals and any pre-existing health concerns you may have.
Note: If you book in for both machines be sure to allow an hour for the session.
There are no lock-in contracts with Hypoxi (always a good thing, right?), instead you make appointments as you need them on the advice of staff. But there are also packs available if you’re looking for a more cost-effective option to help you reach your goals. Three sessions per week is recommended for optimal results.
