Lorna Jane Clarkson Interview

Lorna Jane Doesn't Want You to Make This Common Activewear Mistake

We spoke activewear with the queen of activewear, Lorna Jane Clarkson, because if there's anyone with a wealth of knowledge on the topic it's this workout wonder woman. We asked her everything from how Lorna Jane the brand started to the most common activewear mistakes we all make.

Let's go back to the beginning shall we? The activewear brand Lorna Jane started because . . .

I couldn't find any activewear that inspired me to want to work out, so I simply made the decision to start making my own! I was working as a fitness instructor at the time and when I started wearing my designs to the gym, the women in my classes wanted them and started placing orders. Within weeks I was inundated with orders so I decided to take the plunge and do it full time, and I've never looked back since!

What's the most common mistakes women make when it comes to purchasing activewear?

"Activewear must be supportive, comfortable and fashionable." — Lorna Jane Clarkson

I think the most common mistake women make is to think that all activewear is the same! When the reality is that fabric choice, technology, shape, construction and fit all contribute to how your activewear will make you feel and perform in your workouts. At Lorna Jane we can have up to 40 pairs of black tights in store at any given time, but each of them are designed for completely different purposes and activities. For example, our core compression tights have power mesh panels in the waistband to keep your core and abdominals activated and supported through high intensity workouts, while our seamless tights are designed for comfort and ultimate stretch for things like yoga and Pilates. It's the same with sports bras, with each one tailored to meet the customer's needs in coverage, support, comfort and flexibility.

What inspired your Nothing 2 See Here range?

The idea actually came to me when I was practicing yoga. I've been in many a yoga class over the years and have seen more than my fair share of sheer tights (and what's underneath them) and as the creator of activewear I felt like it was my responsibility to find a solution. Women expect a lot from their tights. We want them to stretch, we want them to be supportive, we want them to be comfortable and we want them to keep us covered when they're stretched to the max doing moves like downward dogs, squats and deadlifts. The Nothing 2 See Here light blocking technology was a year in development and then a further six months in testing — but it was worth every minute! I am so excited to share it with everyone because as women we love to be transparent with our intentions, not our tights so the Nothing 2 See Here range really is a game-changer.

What is your healthy living philosophy?

Active living is my personal life philosophy and a way of life that makes being fit and healthy really easy. It's as simple as making the decision to move your body every day, eat nutritious foods and believe anything is possible if you are willing to try. It's a daily practice that over time is proven to change lives!

What's your go-to exercise?

For me it's definitely yoga . . . it feels great for my body, building strength and flexibility but also has a calming and rejuvenating effect on my mind, which for me is just as important.
