POPSUGAR Australia: What was the hardest thing about competing in Aussie Ninja Warrior?
Nathan McCallum: To be completely honest, it was all the downtime in between events that goes into making a TV show that was the hardest. A lot of sitting around on very hot Summer days, haha.
PS: What was your training schedule like in the lead up?
NM: I found it quite hard to train for Ninja Warrior, not because of the type of training needed, but more because of my travel schedule. I just tried to make sure I was staying consistent with my fitness and diet more than anything.
PS: Were there any workouts that really helped you?
NM: I started doing a lot more body weight training, with more bar work related exercises, to help build grip strength and upper body strength.
PS: Have you always been into this style of training?
NM: I've always tried to train for function more than aesthetics, so I guess that definitely helps when it comes to "ninja style" training. I have a background in martial arts, so was always focused on body weight training from that as well.
PS: How did you hear about Ninja Warrior?
NM: I was actually contacted by one of the producers, to tell me they were bringing the show to Australia, and that I should be involved. That was enough for me!
PS: What does your typical day on a plate look like?
NM: I have a huge calorie intake every day. I'm naturally a very skinny guy, with a fast metabolism. To hold the muscle mass that I do, as well as keeping up my energy levels, I need to take in a lot of calories every day. I try to maintain a healthy balance of protein, carbs and fats, and keep my sugar to a minimum. I would be lying if I said my diet was particularly exciting . . . but it's all part of the job, haha.
PS: What's your go-to exercise guaranteed to get you results?
NM: Pull ups/chin ups. These are the ultimate for me in terms of strength and confidence building. If you can comfortably control your body, you are off to a great start.
