Editor Challenge: What to Eat + How to Train a Few Days Before the City2Surf
I'm just four sleeps away from competing in the City2Surf, and the nerves are kicking in. When I met with Sally from DC Run for our final coaching session last week, we did some sprint work. I had to sprint for 250m, six times, with 90 seconds rest in between. If that sounds hard, that's because it is. But it was an exercise in not only getting my fitness up, but learning how to pace myself.
Sally told me the biggest mistake long-distance runners make is going hard at the start, leaving nothing in the tank for later. I managed to sprint at an 80 percent capacity five times (I shaved a second or two off each time), and then on the sixth and final go, Sally told me to “run like a scared baby animal.” So I did. The result? Ten seconds off my original sprint time. High five.
So that’s my game plan going into Sunday’s race, do look out for me thrashing across the finish line. But jokes aside, I’m starting to feel a little anxious and confused as to what I should be doing this week in the lead-up to the big day. I turned to My Nutrition Coach Amy McKendrick, and DC Run’s David Chamberlain, for the perfect few days before. Now jog it out. . .
