I'm halfway through my challenge as a beginner runner tackling the City2Surf, and I must admit, I'm really quite enjoying myself. I hit the treadmill on the weekend in favour of running outdoors, just so I could work on my technique. Rather than counting down the seconds until I could get off, I actually found myself bounding to the finish line. I'm that girl on the treadmill I've always wanted to be! It's mind-blowing that all I needed to do was learn how to run correctly, to enjoy it.
But both my running coach, Sally, and DC Run director David, tell me conditioning my body for the big race means doing some complementary exercise as well. "Complementary activities are essential for two main reasons. Firstly, they help build running specific strength, fitness and mobility. Secondly, they give your body an opportunity to recover from the high volume of running that your doing in an ‘active’ way," says David. He also says the variety will keep me motivated and engaged in my training, and when he said yoga, I said how high. Wait, what? Click through.
