What Is Clubbell Yoga?

Clubbell Yoga Is the Perfect Workout If You Want to Get Strong and Flexible

It seems like there are always new kinds of yoga popping up around the world. From beer yoga to rage yoga and goat yoga, it's hard to keep up with it all. Clubbell yoga may sound like yet another fleeting trend, but it actually has some real substance to it.

We spoke to Summer Huntington, MS, founder of clubbell yoga and director of Yoga RMAX International, who explained what this system of movement is all about. "Clubbell Yoga is strength training infused into Vinyasa yoga," she told POPSUGAR. "Imagine holding a one-kilos or two-kilo club (modelled after ancient Indian clubs and gadas — weapons used to train warriors for battle) and floating through poses and transitions."

Not only are you going through traditional yoga postures, but you're also strengthening all the major muscles in the body and toning up from head to toe. "What makes clubbell yoga unique is that we train under a light load with a strong emphasis on creating torque in every single conditioning exercise," Summer said. "It's a performance, biomechanics, and kinesiology approach to strengthening your yoga practice, with yoga-specific transitions that are complex, fun, and make you feel like a warrior goddess going to battle every time." Steel clubs range in length but are usually about 12 inches long.

Summer says a typical 20-minute interval clubbell yoga workout uses exercises in a superset format, "alternating between glute work, arm endurance, core, and more." There's a conditioning circuit she does with her students that's "ideal for stress reduction, balancing hormones, and lowering cortisol levels." She added, "There are [more than] 40 clubbell yoga conditioning exercises that will drastically tone your arms, core, and glutes — and literally transform your body in a matter of weeks."

"First timers usually leave class feeling like they got a full-body fascial [of the thin, fibrous tissue enclosing your muscles and organs] massage, finding mobility they didn't know they had," Summer concluded. "The next day, they feel like they worked hip and shoulder muscles they had no idea existed. It wakes up all the sleepy muscles that tend to turn off in a regular yoga class, and kicks your ass gently into full performance mode."
