Sounds pretty good, right? And as if we need prompting! As fun as this charitable cause might seem, though, there is a devastating disease behind it: mitochondrial disease. Known as mito, it's a genetic disease that completely robs the body of its energy, leaving sufferers almost totally bed bound. With no known cure, a diagnosis of the illness can seem like a death sentence. Recent studies show that about one in 200 people carry the mitochondrial defect, and while majority of carriers manage to avoid contracting the actual disease, the numbers are scary — it's the second most common genetic disease after cystic fibrosis.
