What Was Your Version of Going “Off the Rails” In Lockdown? For Gwyneth Paltrow, It Was Eating Bread

Lockdown was a wild time, there’s no doubt about it. And compared to the rest of the world, Australia has fared quite well when it comes to time spent in quarantine. But, at the beginning of the pandemic when we weren’t quite sure what was happening, it felt like lockdown would never end.

Chances are, things got a little haphazard at this point. For some people, that might have manifested in online shopping, endless Zoom quizzes or jumping on the sourdough starter train. For Gwyneth Paltrow, it was drinking cocktails and eating bread on a daily basis.

Paltrow revealed her pandemic-induced habits on a recent episode of the SmartLess podcast, which is hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett. The goop founder told the hosts that she was now “on a bit of a cleanout” as she had gone “off the rails”.

“Basically during quarantine, I was drinking seven nights a week and making pasta and eating bread,” Paltrow said. “Like I went totally off the rails. I mean, who drinks multiple drinks seven nights a week? That’s not healthy.”

Granted drinking every night of the week isn’t recommended, there’s nothing wrong with consuming bread and pasta on a daily basis if that’s what you feel like doing. And, in the days of lockdown when the only thing getting you through was your next meal, who didn’t spend hours dreaming about spaghetti and garlic bread?

As for Paltrow’s drink of choice during this time? Well, she wasn’t sipping on wine or gin, but whiskey made from quinoa. “It’s this great quinoa whiskey from this distillery in Tennessee with maple syrup and lemon juice, and it’s just heaven,” Paltrow explained. “And I would have two of those every night of quarantine.”
