Flip Your Winged Liner on Its Head With the Reverse Cat Eye

The classic winged liner has officially been bumped in favour of the reverse cat eye and we have TikTok to thank. It seems like all the new makeup trends gaining traction these days are born on TikTok and in no time at all, are being emulated by people around the world. This is definitely the case with the reverse cat eye.

LA-based makeup artist Spencer recently uploaded a video on TikTok wearing the reverse cat eye, which as the name suggests, involves applying eyeliner to your lower lash line and creating a smoky winged moment on the bottom of your eye rather than the top. In fact, you leave the top of your eyelid bare except for a lick of mascara.

To create this look, start by lining your waterline with black eyeliner, slowly building up the intensity. Then, take an angled makeup brush and begin to softly blur the liner to create a smoky effect, bringing the liner out into a wing at the outer corner of your eye. It’s up to you how bold you want the eyeliner on your waterline to look, so feel free to add more product if you want to.

Finish off by applying mascara and you’re done! Spencer’s TikTok video has over 1.9 million views and the technique has been replicated by a number of TikTok users, who have also included handy video tutorials on how to complete the look.

While this is a fun new take on winged eyeliner, it isn’t exactly a new approach, with Dazed Beauty noting that South Asian and Arab people have long used kohl liner to create a similar look. “Bollywood girlies have been doing this kajol look for years,” one user wrote on Spencer’s TikTok video.

This is one trend we’ll be trying ASAP!
