Simone Biles Triple Double Dismount Off Beam

Simone Biles Is Back in the Gym — and She's Showing Off Her Newest High-Flying Flip

We were downright in awe when Simone Biles introduced us to her incredible double-double dismount off beam last year — that's two flips and two twists in a tucked position. It was named after her once she competed it at the 2019 World Gymnastics Championships. Now, she's playing around with a dismount on that same event that's even more difficult: a triple-double. Above, you'll see Biles do this triple-twisting double backflip into a pit of foam blocks (from experience, they're really fun to flip into, and they're great for practicing new skills!). To break it down for you, she's adding one more twist to the double-twisting double backflip dismount that already bears her name.

According to an interview earlier this month with coach Cecile Landi, Biles returned to training a few weeks ago with modified hours. And it seems like she's getting right back into it. You might remember that Biles already has a triple-double named after her on floor — it's the Biles II and is worth a "J" or one whole point, the highest-valued difficulty granted in the FIG Women's Artistic Gymnastics Code of Points. So, essentially, the flip she's doing here is a flip she's familiar with, but it's done connected to two back handspring step-outs that she does on a four-inch beam. No biggie, right?

Will we see this skill at the Tokyo Olympics next summer? Only time will tell. But, if we had a say in the matter, we'd bet on Biles because just when you think she can't get any better, she's flipping in ways you never knew was possible. She's challenging her limits and the limits of her sport — that's what she does best.
