Why Travel Is the Kind of Therapy That Works For Me

One of the biggest things that has helped calm my anxiety is traveling to new places and meeting new people. You have no choice but to be present when you travel, completely letting go of the past and not worrying about the future.

Most people may think that travel causes more anxiety than being home, but for me, that’s not the case. Whether it’s embarking on a solo trip or vacationing with friends, here are the reasons I choose to go on a new adventure and invest in travel instead of paying to see a therapist.

  1. Travel teaches me about myself. As a 20-something who’s continuously going through big life changes (both positive and negative), it’s important to reflect on how I handle situations and learn from my mistakes. While going to therapy sessions helps many people, traveling teaches me more about myself than any other human can.
  2. It allows me to really take a break. When on a new journey, I can unplug and take a break from my hectic life living in New York City. It’s a great way to clear your mind and remember the important things in life.
  3. It gives a sense of freedom. Traveling is freeing for me, especially when I am alone. I’m on my own time, in my own space, and with my own plans, which can be comforting and beneficial. There’s no better feeling than going with the flow in a new destination.
  4. It shows me that patience is key. Not everything is going to fall into place at the time you may want it to, and that’s OK. Traveling takes patience and understanding, which can be helpful in realizing that what is meant to be will be.
  5. Travel lasts a lifetime. In the past, I’ve been to medical appointments and even took pills to help me control my anxiety at times, but for me, it was a temporary solution. Life isn’t always easy, but doing what you love and finding your passion, whether it be traveling, exercising, or something else, is the first real step to recovery and finding happiness.
