If you’re someone who’s spent countless hours in The Sims 4, mods might be the perfect thing to make the game feel fresh and exciting again. Through mods, you can give your Sims new personality traits, adjust their appearance more than ever before, buy new furniture for your house, and even give your Sims new jobs and more options for woohoo-ing.

There are hundreds of The Sims 4 mods to choose from, but to help you decide which ones to install first, we’ve rounded up some of the best. These mods will make The Sims better than ever and will improve how your game runs while giving you new content to play with.

How to Install The Sims 4 Mods

Once you’ve downloaded a mod, drag and drop the files into your The Sims 4 “Mods” folder, which should be automatically created when you install the game. You can find the folder in: Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods.

The next time you launch the game, you’ll need to enable mods by going into the Options menu under the Other tab. Click “Enable Custom Content and Mods” and “Script Mods Allowed”, then restart your game. This process only applies to people playing on PC or Mac, because PlayStation and Xbox don’t allow The Sims 4 mods to be installed.

Some mods might have extra steps you need to complete before you can play them, which will be explained in the installation instructions. Certain mods also require you to install another mod first, like if it uses custom content created by another modder.

The Best Sims 4 Mods

Melanin Pack 2

Made by custom content creator Xmiramira, the Melanin Pack 2 mod adds 54 skin tones for creating Black and Brown Sims. It also includes highlighter and blush makeup options that pair nicely with the custom skin tones. This mod gives you much more diversity in Create A Sim, and lets you create Sims who reflect people with darker skin tones more accurately.

Slice of Life

This mod gives your Sim a Myers-Briggs personality type that affects their behaviour, hobbies, and mood. Slice of Life tweaks a lot of things in the game that make it more realistic, like allowing your Sims to get drunk, catch a cold, create a skincare routine, and better reflect their emotions. You can also download mini-packs to add things like social media, menstrual cycles and makeup and beauty products.

Autonomous Proposals and Breakups Mod

Want to give your Sim a more realistic dating life? The Autonomous Proposals and Breakups Mod makes other Sims ask your character out on dates, propose to them and, occasionally, break up with them. It makes romance in The Sims 4 feel much more realistic because you’re not always the one initiating things.

Better BuildBuy

This mod overhauls the building menu to make it easier to navigate and search for specific items. Better BuildBuy expands the number of items you can see at once in each category, lets you search by filter, and gives you a FreeCam option to better find the perfect spot for a piece of furniture.

Complete Cooking Overhaul

With this mod, your Sim needs to shop for groceries before they can make a meal, including several new food products like coffee beans, flour and hot sauce. The mod also overhauls the recipes to make them more realistic — you’ll need to use a big selection of the fresh groceries your Sim just bought! Complete Cooking Overhaul is a great mod for anyone who wishes the food and drinks in The Sims 4 was a bit more complex.

Life’s Drama

This mod is about as close as you can get to having your Sim become a reality TV star. Life’s Drama adds a new popularity system that tracks how influential your Sim is, lets your Sim gossip and share secrets, get in public fights with other Sims, and give fashion and relationship advice to their friends.

My Wedding

Plan your Sim’s dream wedding with this mod that lets you plan every party of the ceremony, from hiring a wedding planner to reserving a venue and sending out wedding invitations. You’ll even be able to go on honeymoon with My Wedding, and order a photo album so your Sim and their partner can commemorate the event.

More Create a Sim Traits

Normally you can only give your Sim three traits, but this mod lets you select additional traits to better express their personality. Pair it with a mod that adds custom traits, like this one that gives your Sim a love of baking or the Better Traits Bundle, which reorganises the base traits, lifestyle and hobby options.
