The New Dreams Update Makes it Easier Than Ever to Make Your Own Game

Explaining Dreams is tricky. It’s a game, but it’s also a game-creation toolkit. The PlayStation 4 title gives you the tools to create your own games, which you can then share with other players who can rate it to help curate a huge library of free games. The new Dreams update makes this process easier, adding a whole heap of new toolkits to help you start creating things.

In a post on the PlayStation blog, developers Media Molecule explained what’s new in the Dreams update, including a new game and a template system that lets creators start with a basic structure in place based on a game genre.

“Since launching Dreams, we’ve found that DreamShaping can be overwhelming for new players,” said Jen Simpkins, editorial manager at Media Molecule. “With our new template system, and a reworking of the DreamShaping UI, we hope this huge update will help make getting started making games in Dreams quicker, easier and more fun than ever before.”

“The new version of DreamShaping includes handy game templates and brand-new elements for making a 2D platformer, a dungeon crawler, a side-scrolling shoot-’em-up, mini-golf and more besides – including a dedicated template for Ancient Dangers: A Bat’s Tale, which features a huge kit for your creative delectation.”

Ancient Dangers: A Bat’s Tale is the name of the new game that’s been added in the Dreams update. It’s a third-person dungeon crawler made by Media Molecule themselves, in which players fight solo as the heroic orc Scoria or as their twin Gabbro in local co-op mode. Like all Media Molecule stories, Ancient Dangers is a sweet and funny adventure full of heart. Scoria and Gabbro are on a quest to find a herb to cure their grandmother’s terrible snoring, and along the way they meet a wise-cracking bat and a dragon with a flair for floristry.

Ancient Dangers: A Bat’s Tale is a complete game in itself, but it also comes with a template to help players create their own dungeon crawler. The Ancient Dangers template shows off the big DreamShaping changes, with objectives and pointers that make the development feel like a game in itself.

The update also improved the curation options, game suggestions, user interface and more. The Dreams update is available now for all players.
