Ikea's First Foray Into Smart Lighting Is Really Smart
In its endless quest to make our lives even easier, Ikea is moving into the smart home realm previously reserved for high-end tech brands who brought out talking fridges and expensive humidifiers you can control from the next state. It's the next step after last year's wireless charging range.
"We're really excited about the future of Ikea Home Smart. For Ikea it's not just making gadgets, we want to add functionality into our entire product range by integrating technology into our home furnishing offer," said Ikea's home furnishing expert Helen Longford. "We want to use this innovative project to help people use technology in their homes in clever ways to enrich their lives or to simply make things easier. Smart Lighting is just the beginning for us."
The lifestyle juggernaut's first collection in the smart space is Smart Lighting, which will launch early next year. The collection is made up of adjustable bulbs, LED light doors, motion sensors and remotes that allow you to control the brightness and colour of your lights. All the bulbs can also be controlled through the TRÅDFRI app which will launch with the collection in early 2018.
"There are endless possibilities with the collection," said Helen. "It can be set up to create a different type of light for early mornings, another setting for late nights and one for working or cooking."
Being exposed to the correct lighting at the right times of the day can have a big impact on your sleep and energy levels, and as we increasingly spend more time looking at screens, it's more important than ever to have our homes mimic the light cycles of the sun. This was a big factor in the designing process of Dyson's first light which hit the market last year, and we're tipping smart lighting to be a big thing in the coming years.
Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but for now, scroll for a peek at the collection.
