The big complaint by the contestants on The Block this year has been the inconsistency in scores vs. comments, and the difficulty in determining just what exactly Shaynna Blaze means by "modern art deco". A mixture of '20s influence and modern aesthetic — it can be a difficult combination to get right. Shaynna's biggest complaint has been that some of the rooms have felt "too styled" and are missing that all important "warmth" factor.
The other day I was invited into Beach St Tanning in Paddington (beauty editor note: this is where I got one of the best even and perfectly golden tans I've had in a long time!), and as soon as I walked in the door I was struck by the décor. The turquoise accents added a colourful pop, the velvet furnishings were warm and inviting, the golden drinks cart and gilded stool added a decadent touch, while the black and white prints, cane furniture and indoor ferns gave a clean and modern edge . . . I had walked into a modern art deco dream.
I chatted to Lauren during my spray — you know, the usual beauty treatment banter: our weekend plans, the appalling Sydney dating scene, who we thought was going to win The Bachelor — and I asked her about the stunning interior design for her salon. This is when she revealed that she, and her co-founder Giuliana, had commissioned Shaynna to fit out the entire place. Of course! Suddenly everything made sense.
Naturally, being a regular watcher of The Block, I needed all the details. Read on for our chat to Lauren and Giuliana about their salon fit-out, working with Shaynna and what they love most about the style that's driving the blockheads wild!
