The mullet haircut is back with a vengeance, but Jazmine Sullivan is adding her own signature flair to the fashion-forward trend. “Happy holidays everyone❤️” the R&B singer posted on Instagram with a debut snap of her new look, alongside a photo of the “Tiger King,” Joe Exotic, rocking a similar cut. But despite their stylistic similarities, Sullivan’s version of the “business in the front, party in the back” hairstyle has a rocker-chic edge that sets it apart.

Going on to perform at the 2022 V103 Winterfest in Atlanta, she emphasized this energy with a sheer lace catsuit, lace-up heels, and a powerful black trench coat complete with shoulder pads. Sullivan joins celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Lil Nas X, who have also rocked the mullet in the 21st century – giving the cut a chance at redemption despite its controversial reputation.

Although the mullet garnered most of its popularity back in the ’80s, on a historical level, it’s always been worn by people with a rebellious edge. After David Bowie’s iconic Ziggy Stardust touted the style’s capacity for gender ambiguity, the cut quickly became a staple in LGBTQ+ spaces. It was also worn by counterculture rockers and country folk alike, both of whom were drawn to what was deemed “tacky” and largely unfashionable on a mainstream level.

Now, according to celebrity hairstylist and Nine Zero One salon cofounder Riawna Capri, this is precisely what continues to entice celebrities to this day. “This haircut is for someone who is confident, who steps outside the box, and whose style is on the edgier side,” Capri says. “Ultimately, when you’re wearing a unique hairstyle or piece of clothing, if you have the confidence to rock it and be different, everyone else will love it, too.” Check out the photos below to see how Sullivan is rocking it.
