If avoiding popular names is your plan, then you’d better steer away from Oliver. Though a beautiful and classic name, Oliver has been consistently popular over the last decade, taking out the top spot for the past seven years since it overtook Jack as the number one boys name in 2013, according to records from McCrindle.
William and its shorter counterpart Liam have been in the top 10 consistently for years, but in 2020, Liam was pushed out in favour of Charlie. William held on, coming in at number four, even though it was overtaken by newcomer Noah. Experts speculate the rising popularity of actor Noah Centineo to be an influence on this name’s popularity.
The celebrity effect is real when it comes to baby names, and looking at the list, it’s clear to see where new parents took their inspiration. Lovers of Leonardo DiCaprio may have opted for Leo (5). Fans of the royal family and in particular, of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, took after the couple to name their son Archie (25). Further down the list at number 73, we see Sonny, which may have found new popularity after Hamish and Zoe Foster Blake named their first-born.
