Los Angeles is usually the first port-of-call for anyone travelling through the United States from Australia. Given that the majority of our long-haul flights land in LAX Airport, it makes sense to use the opportunity to recover from that jet lag with a little exploration of Hollywood and surrounds before jetting off to other favourites like New York City and San Francisco.
If you’re in LA, you should always keep your eyes peeled for a celebrity sighting. Spotting celebrities in LA is not a difficult task. After all, it’s still the primary city for creatives in film, television and music, so it’s not uncommon to be walking down Melrose Avenue and find yourself passing Kim Kardashian mid-phone call, or Leonardo DiCaprio at a work lunch. You just need to be alert and aware.
Still, you’re going to have the best luck if you make a booking at one of the hottest LA restaurants right now, or wander around known celebrity hangouts. These change all the time, but below you’ll find some of the current celebrity hotspots in LA for 2023.
Polo Lounge, Beverly Hills
The famous restaurant that sits by the pool inside the Beverly Hills Hotel is swarming with Hollywood hotshots — even if you don’t see a famous celebrity, you’ll definitely be sitting near someone’s publicist, producer or director. It’s a long-time favourite meeting place for the film and television industry, so keep your ears open for fascinating conversations.
Urth Caffe, Beverly Hills
Not only is this al fresco cafe a celebrity magnet, it also does a damn good breakfast at a decent price. Everyone from Kylie Jenner to Jake Gyllenhaal has been seen sipping a latte or chowing down on the famous bread pudding (a must try), so take a seat on the Italian-inspired patio and do a little people watching.
Catch LA, West Hollywood
With a name like Catch LA, you know what to expect from this high-end restaurant — the freshest seafood in the city. An expansion of the original (and equally celebrity-frequented) New York restaurant, David Beckham and Mariah Carey are among the many rumoured faces spotted at its tables.
TomTom, West Hollywood
Whether you’re a long-standing fan of “Vanderpump Rules” or a new convert thanks to #Scandoval, spotting a cast member in LA is easy if you head to one of Lisa Vanderpump and Co.’s many restaurants. Our pick is TomTom — the drinks are delicious, the vibe relaxed and buzzy, and when we swung by we wound up mid-filming, meeting Ken and Lisa Vanderpump, James Kennedy, and even the Vanderpump dogs.
Craig’s, West Hollywood
Getting a reservation at Craig’s is like trying to score Taylor Swift tour tickets — if you manage it, you’ll be the envy of celebrity-spotting fans everywhere, but don’t hold your breath. Still, it’s worth a shot — the popular fine dining venue has seen the likes of Joe Jonas, John Legend and Miley Cyrus swing by.
Chateau Marmont, Hollywood Hills
The celebrity-spotting venue to end them all — Chateau Marmont has been the hangout for famous people in Hollywood since its opening back in 1929. Marilyn Monroe lived here, Lindsay Lohan’s famous hook-up list was written in one of its rooms. Only guests of the hotel have full access, but anyone can stop in for a drink at the bar, where you might see famous faces such as Rihanna, Beyonce and Paul Rudd.
Brentwood Country Mart, Brentwood
Celebrities — they’re just like us, which means that when their “people” aren’t out grocery shopping for them, they’re doing it themselves. Except unlike us, they go to organic markets and boutiques, exclusively. You’ll find plenty of these at Brentwood Country Mart, which is a lovely place to wander through regardless of who you may see.
Erewhon, Fairfax District
Speaking of organic, it doesn’t get more high-end health than Erewhon, the latest craze in LA. Prices are sky-high, but the food (and especially the smoothies) are incredible, which is why you may spot Kaia Gerber, Ashley Benson or Cara Delevingne donning sunglasses and perusing the cereal aisle.
Giorgio Baldi, Pacific Palisades
If you’re trying to spot Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, you should get a reservation at Giorgio Baldi. It’s the artist’s favourite restaurant and she has been snapped time and again exiting its doors after a meal. Hailey Baldwin, Kim Kardashian and Alessandra Ambrosio have also been seen here.
Runyon Canyon, Hollywood
Somewhere you’re very likely to run into celebrities without spending a single dollar is on a hike. LA is full of hiking paths winding up into its hills, and all of them have seen celebrities huffing up their rocky inclines during workouts. Runyon Canyon is one of the most highly-frequented given its proximity to Hollywood and ease of access — Justin Bieber, Amanda Seyfried, Natalie Portman and Channing Tatum have all been seen on its slopes.
