I'm going to start calling Gwyneth Paltrow a vagina aristocrat. She loves to treat her lady bits to some really fancy stuff. The founder of lifestyle brand Goop first introduced us to the vagina steam clean. Then she recommended a $15,000 24-carat gold-plated vibrator. So what could possibly be next? Why a jade egg for your vulva, of course.
No, this is not a joke. Goop spoke to actress and "beauty guru/healer/inspiration/friend" Shiva Rose who recommends that women insert jade eggs into their vagina on a regular basis. Egg users say that using the product "increases chi, orgasms, vaginal muscle tone, hormonal balance, and feminine energy in general," according to Goop.
After the news of the jade eggs went viral, doctors are beginning to speak up about the negative affects of using them. Dr. Jen Gunter, an OB/GYN in San Francisco, wrote a blog post explaining why the eggs could actually be really bad for you. "I would like to point out that jade is porous which could allow bacteria to get inside and so the egg could act like a fomite," she explains. "This is not good, in case you were wondering. It could be a risk factor for bacterial vaginosis or even the potentially deadly toxic shock syndrome."
Gunter goes on to say that pelvic floor muscles are not meant to continuously contract and doing so could cause pain. Overall it might not be the best idea to use the eggs.
The little $87 stones have already sold out on the Goop site. Take a look at what the eggs look like below, but think twice before going on a waiting list to get one! You don't want to risk any health issues.
