The first advertisement against same sex marriage aired across Australia on Tuesday night, and as expected, has once again prompted heated debate in the fight for LGBTQ rights. The ad features three mothers airing their concerns about the effects the legalisation of same sex marriage would have in schools. It is premised on the argument that parents will ultimately lose control about what messages are being promoted to their children.
Backlash on the ad varied, with many arguing that it is offensive to LGBTQ families, ineffective and irrelevant in its messaging. Politicians such as Bill Shorten have said: "This is not freedom of speech. This is freedom to hurt. I just want to tell LGBTI families that they are not on their own. Most people know this is total rubbish."
The Coalition for Marriage is urging Australians to donate to the campaign to keep the ad on air. You can watch it in full above, and scroll further for the best social media reactions.
