Malcolm Turnbull Adopted a Slogan From Veep and Julia Louis-Dreyfus Is "Dumbstruck"
Being a real-life Prime Minister heading into an election, it's curious that Malcolm Turnbull thought it was a good idea to start pushing a phrase from the election campaign of Julia Louis-Dreyfus' character Selina Meyer in the comedy series Veep.
Malcolm Turnbull has been recorded saying "continuity and change" in a bid to distance himself from former Liberal leader Tony Abbott in the lead-up to the election, which is almost identical to Meyer's campaign slogan "continuity with change". Former Veep showrunner Armando Iannucci told The Hollywood Reporter the slogan was chosen because it "is the most concise example we could come up with of a politician saying a word and its opposite very quickly." Iannucci added, "The aim is to have it sound snappy and confident, as if it makes sense. In fact, it means nothing. The two words cancel each other out."
So yes, it's a slogan that means nothing at all, and it's the phrase of choice for our Prime Minister. On finding out, the cast and crew of Veep took to Twitter to give their sentiments on having the slogan adopted. Julia Louis-Dreyfus summed it up best, tweeting "dumbstruck".
