Finally! Australia will has marriage equality! Now that we have the green light there will no doubt be a bevy of proposals (yay!), but how soon will same-sex couples be able to marry?
To be married in Australia, a Notice of Intended Marriage form must be completed and given to your celebrant a month prior to your wedding day. For same-sex couples this isn't able to be received until the day same-sex marriage becomes legal. The official line from the Australian Government reads, "The date from which same-sex weddings could occur in Australia will depend on the date the Australian law is changed to allow same-sex marriage."
The Notice of Intended Marriage month waiting period can be waived in exceptional circumstances related to medical reasons, religious considerations, employment travel commitments or legal proceedings. Outside of those, it looks like the first few weeks of 2018 will be the earliest same-sex couples will be able to get hitched in Australia.
