Heartbreaking Photos of the Bushfires Devastating NSW and QLD Right Now
After days of devastating bushfires across Queensland and New South Wales, an official state of emergency has been declared.
On Monday, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian declared a state of emergency in NSW for the next seven days. The last time this emergency declaration was made in NSW was during the Blue Mountains bushfires of 2013.
"With catastrophic weather conditions predicted for this week, particularly Tuesday with hot weather and strong winds, I have decided to take the Commissioner's advice and make this declaration," Gladys confirmed at a press conference (as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald).
The declaration comes as no surprise given the level of destruction the fires have already caused. As of November 11, three people have lost their lives, and hundreds of homes have been destroyed. According to news.com.au, dozens of blazes remain burning in both NSW and QLD.
November 12 marks the first day since the current NSW fire danger ratings were created 10 years ago that Sydney has been considered at a 'catastrophic' risk, as reported by news.com.au. As a result of the warnings. hundreds of schools across both states were closed on Tuesday.
