Prince Harry on Fatherhood and WaterBear | Video

Prince Harry Shared Why Becoming a Father Immediately Changed How He Wanted to Save the Planet

For Prince Harry, becoming a father to baby Archie in May of 2019 changed everything. Sure, he had to change nappies, be on bedtime story duty, and adjust to a whole new life as a family of three, but the Duke of Sussex said fatherhood entirely shifted his focus for how he wanted to combat climate change and save the planet. On Dec. 1, Harry helped announce the launch of WaterBear Network, a new streaming service focussed solely on documentaries and nonfiction works "dedicated to the future of our planet." The app not only provides these visual, educational resources about conservation but also allows users to take action and get involved directly through the app. The partnership means a lot to Harry, not only for right now, but especially for the future.

"We can't steal their future. We really can't."

In a video with WaterBear, he opened up about how we must do this for our children. "The moment you become a father everything really does change because then you start to realise, well, what is the point in bringing a new person into this world when they get to your age and it's on fire? We can't steal their future. We really can't. That's not the role, that's not the job we're here for," he said. "I've always believed that hopefully we can leave the world in a better place than when we found it."

Of course, fatherhood has immensely fuelled his mission to conserve the planet, but it's also his love for nature throughout his entire life that led him to partner with the streaming service. "For me, it's about putting the dos behind the says, and that is something WaterBear is doing and is going to be doing by capitalizing on a community of doers. There's a lot of people that say, but this is about action. I've always been this way. Being in nature is the most healing part of life, and I truly believe that's one reason why it's there."
