These Retro Contiki Ads Are Pure Aussie Gold
Contiki is celebrating 55 years of taking young Aussies to see the sights of Europe. Which means not only your parents, but possibly your grandparents were among those who spent nine weeks travelling through the continent on a big yellow bus. As a result of their longevity (more and a million Aussies have been on a Contiki trip) Contiki has some pretty fascinating stats.
In the '60s England, France, Italy and Switzerland were on the top of everyone's bucketlist — now it's all about the Mediterranean. Millennials prefer longer, slower paced trips (we're clearly not living as hard and fast as our parents did), and food and "Instagrammability" are two of the largest influences in choosing a favourite destination — not something the youth cared about in the '70s.
One of our favourite stats to come from their birthday research is that one in three trips over the last five and a half decades has resulted in a marriage proposal (they have a hastag for them!). So if you want to know if someone is "the one", five weeks travelling on a bus with a bunch of other people is the way to do it. And who can blame them, when the TV ads from the '70s and '80s looked so romantic (jokes). Scroll to see them for yourself, and as you do, please imagine your parents being among them.
