How This Instagram Initiative Is Helping Local Businesses Affected By the Bushfires
One of the latest shows of support, 'Spend With Them' is an initiative inspired by the local Buy From The Bush Campaign, which was set up as a way for people around Australia to support rural businesses during the drought.
Founded by Turia Pitt and Gracie McBride, Spend With Them, is an Instagram account dedicated to showcasing small businesses in fire-affected towns, encouraging people to shop locally in the hopes of helping put money back into the communities that need it most.
"Fires have ravaged towns and devastated communities across Australia. It's been going on for months. And once they're finally over, it won't be over for many of the local businesses in the towns you're seeing on the TV and hearing about on the radio." Pitt posted to the Instagram's now 156k (and climbing) followers.
"So, if you want to buy something (now, or in the future), check out the stuff we feature here on this page and buy something from one of these businesses . . . Long after the threat is over and the choppers stop flying overhead. Long after summer ends and the wail of sirens ceases in the streets. Help them rebuild. Make them feel heard. Spend with them."
Some of the businesses featured so far include Vinteloper, a small winey from the Adelaide Hills, Milton Mushrooms, a mushroom farm on NSW's South Coast and family owned surf shop, Akaw Surf from Milton.
